The Widness By Pass is a length of continous dual carriageway between the M62 motorway and the Runcorn Bridge over the River Mersey.

This project was completed by adopting an alternative design proposal by the contractor.
Most of this road is on embankments up to 8km high, over soft contaminated ground.
By using vibro-replacement stone columns, driven pre-cast concrete piles and an alternative pavement foundation, this avoided the need to excavate, and remove licensed tips, a large volume of soft and contaminated waste.

This alternative approach resulted in a reduced cost to the Highways Agency compared with the conforming design and produced a solution with equivalent or better performance.
